"AI modified" means Pinterest received or detected a signal that generative AI was used to create or alter a Pin. Pinterest can use embedded metadata, information supplied by the content owner, and automated classifiers. The label does not tell you how much of the image changed, and "may be modified with AI" indicates Pinterest's system flagged it rather than confirmed its full production history. Why Pinterest adds the label

Pinterest says it analyzes metadata following the IPTC Metadata Standard and also uses classifiers that can detect generative-AI content without obvious markers. A content owner can separately indicate that AI created or modified the image. Pinterest AI transparency information

Those signals answer different questions:

  • Metadata: what the file or editing system records about provenance.

  • Owner disclosure: what the uploader says about production.

  • Classifier: what Pinterest's detection model estimates from the content.

None is a frame-by-frame explanation of the edit. A label can cover a fully generated scene, a generated person, or an image altered with AI tools, depending on the disclosure shown.

Where the AI Modified label appears

For a non-promoted Pin, Pinterest says the label appears at the bottom-left of the close-up after a user opens the Pin.

For an ad, the Gen AI label does not appear in the same close-up position. Users can open the ellipsis menu beside the Pin to see the disclosure with other ad details.

The disclosure may say the Pin was modified with AI, contains an AI-generated person, or may be modified with AI. Read the exact words before assuming which signal triggered it.

What to do when the label is correct

Leave the disclosure in place. Then check the Pin and destination for accuracy:

  • Do not present generated people, rooms, recipes, products, or results as documentary evidence.

  • State when an image is illustrative if a buyer could otherwise misunderstand it.

  • Keep price, dimensions, availability, safety, and performance claims tied to real product data.

  • Check commercial and affiliate disclosures separately.

  • Preserve rights and license records for source images, fonts, logos, and generated assets.

An AI label is not a substitute for a truthful Pin.

Appeal a label when it is wrong

Pinterest's current instructions say to contact its support team if you find an AI label on one of your Pins and want to appeal it.

Prepare:

  1. The Pin URL and account details.

  2. The original image or project file.

  3. Export history and editing steps.

  4. Camera metadata where available and appropriate.

  5. Licenses for stock or commissioned work.

  6. A short explanation of why the label is inaccurate.

Do not strip metadata or repeatedly re-upload the same file in an attempt to evade detection. That can destroy useful provenance evidence and create duplicate content.

Does AI Modified hurt reach?

Pinterest's Gen AI label help page explains disclosure and appeal; it does not state that the label itself automatically suppresses organic distribution. Reach can change for many reasons, including relevance, content quality, duplication, policy status, audience response, and demand.

Do not confuse correlation with cause. If a labeled Pin underperforms, compare it with similar Pins, check impressions and outbound clicks, inspect the destination, and review account notifications. One label plus one weak chart is not proof of a penalty.

Be sceptical of any tool that claims it can remove an AI label or diagnose a penalty Pinterest hasn't documented — neither is something a third party can do, and the label decision sits entirely with Pinterest.

What a publishing tool can honestly do is keep the production evidence tidy: Pinners Haven builds each pin on a human-designed template with the generated image colour-matched to it, and keeps the source and approval trail, which is exactly the record an appeal needs.

Reduce AI Pins in your own feed

The creator label and viewer preference are separate. To see less AI content, Pinterest currently provides category-level controls under Refine your recommendations on desktop and Android. It promises fewer AI recommendations, not a complete block. Pinterest recommendation controls

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Modified the same as fully AI generated?

Not necessarily. The label can cover content generated or altered with AI. Read the disclosure wording for any distinction Pinterest provides.

Can Pinterest make a mistake?

Pinterest uses classifiers as well as metadata and owner signals, so a creator may believe a label is incorrect. Pinterest provides an appeal route through Support.

Can I remove the label myself?

Pinterest does not document a self-service removal switch. Appeal through Support when the label is wrong. Do not manipulate files merely to bypass disclosure.

What is IPTC metadata?

IPTC photo metadata is a standard way to embed descriptive, rights, and provenance information in image files. Pinterest says it follows the IPTC standard as one input to Gen AI labeling.

Does editing in Photoshop trigger the label?

Ordinary editing does not automatically prove generative AI use. Some tools can write AI-related provenance metadata when generative features are used. The exact label may also come from Pinterest's classifier or owner disclosure.

Should creators disclose AI even without a label?

Follow Pinterest policy, applicable law, client agreements, and professional standards. If AI use could materially mislead a reasonable viewer, clearer disclosure is safer than relying on detection alone.

Keep the production evidence

Save the source file, project history, licenses, and export. If a label is correct, that record helps you explain the image honestly. If it is wrong, the same record gives Support something better than "trust me" to review.
