Pinterest doesn't have its own dark mode switch. On iPhone and Android the app follows your device's system-wide dark mode automatically, so you change it in your phone's settings rather than in Pinterest. On desktop there is no native dark mode at all, and the only options are a browser extension or your browser's own experimental dark-content flag. If you've been hunting through Pinterest's settings for a toggle, that's why you can't find it.

iPhone and iPad

Pinterest follows iOS. Change it system-wide:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap Display & Brightness.

  3. Select Dark.

Pinterest switches with everything else. To have it change on a schedule, turn on Automatic on the same screen and set your sunrise/sunset or custom times.

If Pinterest is already open, close and reopen it.

Android

Android varies more by manufacturer, but the route is the same idea:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to Display (sometimes Display & brightness).

  3. Turn on Dark theme.

Most Android devices also expose a dark theme tile in the quick settings shade, which is faster. Some Pinterest Android builds also expose a theme option in the app's own settings, so it's worth a look under your profile → settings if the system setting alone doesn't take effect.

Desktop

Here's the part people waste time on: Pinterest's website has no dark mode. There's no setting, and no amount of looking will find one.

Your options, in order of how much we'd recommend them:

1. Your browser's forced dark rendering. Chromium-based browsers have carried an experimental flag that forces dark rendering on all web content. It's a blunt instrument and it makes some images and text look wrong, which on an image-led site like Pinterest is a real cost.

2. A browser extension. Several general-purpose dark-mode extensions and a few Pinterest-specific themes exist for Chrome and Firefox.

Be careful with extensions. An extension that restyles Pinterest needs permission to read and modify the page, which is a meaningful amount of access to a site you're logged into. Install from a source you trust, check the permissions it asks for, and prefer well-established general dark-mode extensions over obscure single-site themes.

3. Reduce your screen's colour temperature instead. Night Shift on macOS, Night light on Windows. Not dark mode, but it addresses the actual reason most people want it.

If dark mode isn't working

  • Reopen the app. The change often needs a fresh launch.

  • Update Pinterest. Older builds handle theming inconsistently.

  • Check for a battery saver overriding your theme, which some Android devices do.

  • Confirm the device setting actually applied by looking at another app.

  • On desktop, stop looking. It isn't there.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pinterest have a dark mode?

On mobile, yes, inherited from your device's system theme. There's no dedicated switch inside the app, and the Pinterest website has no dark mode.

How do I make Pinterest dark on my computer?

You can't natively. A browser dark-mode extension or your browser's experimental forced-dark setting are the only routes, and both restyle the page rather than using a real Pinterest theme.

Why is my Pinterest still light after enabling dark mode?

Usually because the app was already open, or it needs an update. Close and reopen it, confirm another app also went dark, and check that a battery saver isn't overriding your theme.

Does dark mode save battery on Pinterest?

On OLED and AMOLED screens, dark pixels use less power, so there's a modest saving. On LCD screens the difference is negligible.

Can I schedule Pinterest dark mode?

Not in Pinterest, but you can schedule your device theme. iOS offers Automatic switching in Display & Brightness, and Android offers a schedule in its dark theme settings. Pinterest follows.

The short version

Change your phone, not Pinterest. On desktop, accept that it doesn't exist and decide whether an extension's access to your logged-in account is worth a darker background.
